Larry Nance Jr. and the New Orleans Pelicans partner to fight food insecurity the Greater New Orleans area.

New Orleans, LA New Orleans Pelicans big man and community advocate Larry Nance Jr. has joined forces with the Pelicans to address one of the most pressing issues in the greater New Orleans community: food insecurity. Nance, a familiar face in both the Cleveland and New Orleans communities, is set to unveil his latest community project aimed at making a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.

Earlier this month, Nance took a proactive approach by reaching out to local principals of New Orleans public high schools. In collaboration with these educators, he presented a comprehensive idea: to engage a select group of high school juniors and seniors in the area to develop a detailed plan to combat food insecurity in New Orleans.

On November 30, New Orleans public high school junior and senior students will converge at the Smoothie King Center for a special kick-off event. Nance and prominent civic leaders will deliver insightful presentations on the challenges of food insecurity to the local students. Nance will outline available resources, including support from himself, the New Orleans Pelicans, and local food banks, to assist the students in their projects.

The student groups will work collaboratively on their plans in the lead-up to the final presentation day on February 4, 2024. The top four schools will have the opportunity to present their initiatives to a distinguished panel, including Larry Nance Jr. and representatives from the New Orleans Pelicans, Second Harvest, and the panel will select the winning projects, and, in addition to funding the winning endeavor, will provide scholarships to the outstanding high school seniors involved.

Nance expressed his excitement about this initiative, stating, "I am thrilled to work with the incredible students of New Orleans to address the critical issue of food insecurity. By empowering these young minds and providing them with the support they need, we can make a lasting impact on our community."

The New Orleans Pelicans organization is equally enthusiastic about this collaboration. "Community engagement is a core value of the Pelicans, and we are proud to stand alongside Larry Nance Jr. in this effort to make a positive difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity in our city," said Dr. Darvelle Hutchins, Vice President, Equity and Social Impact for the New Orleans Pelicans.

This collaboration between Larry Nance Jr., the New Orleans Pelicans, and local high school seniors represents the power of sports and community coming together to create positive change. The partnership with Second Harvest and other organizations further demonstrates the commitment to addressing food insecurity through collective action.
