Detroit Pistons Sign Chimezie Metu to 10-Day Contract

Pistons sign former Spurs draft pick to 10-day contract.

As they deal with some injuries to close out the regular season, the Detroit Pistons have decided to bring in some reinforcements. The team announced Wednesday morning that they inked Chimezie Metu to a 10-day contract.

Metu, 26, was a second-round pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2018 draft. Since then, the 6-foot-9 forward has suited up for multiple franchises in recent years.

Metu spent his first two seasons in the league with the Spurs before moving on to the Sacramento Kings. Upon hitting free agency last offseason, he landed a minimum contract on the star-studded Phoenix Suns

Phoenix didn't give Metu much playing time, averaging just 12 minutes per game across 37 matchups. He saw himself on the move at the deadline as he was part of the Royce O'Neal trade. Metu wound up on the Memphis Grizzlies, where he was eventually waived.

Now with the Pistons, the young forward has a chance to showcase his talents with a new team. For his career, the former second-round pick is averaging 5.0 PPG, 3.0 RPG, and 0.5 APG.

As for the Pistons, they are looking to put an end to their three-game losing streak. They'll be in action Wednesday night, taking on Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers

Due to the timing of the signing, Metu likely won't be available for the matchup against Indiana. His first potential chance to debut after that is Friday night against the Boston Celtics

With the Pistons already out of playoff contention, there's no harm in taking a flier on a young player like Metu.
