Report: Dennis Schröder Battling Achilles Injury Ahead of World Cup

Toronto Raptors guard Dennis Schröder is dealing with an Achilles injury as he prepares for the FIBA World Cup this summer

The big offseason signing for the Toronto Raptors Dennis Schröder says he’s not quite at 100 percent as he heads into the FIBA World Cup for Germany later this month.

The 29-year-old point guard suffered an Achilles’ injury late last season with the Los Angeles Lakers and is still trying to get over the injury, according to BasketNews.

"I had Achilles tendon problems at the end of the season and then all the time in the off-season," Schroder told the German media. “I've had it treated, and I'm trying to get back to 100 percent... Everyone's getting ready. It's looking very good.”

Germany’s head coach Gordon Herbert said Schroder is in good shape but not in top form quite yet.

“We still have time. We work on it every day. We have to work hard in training, but we also need days to recover,” he continued.

Schröder signed a two-year, $26 million deal with Toronto to replace Fred VanVleet following his departure for the Houston Rockets this offseason. It’s so far unclear if Schröder will be the team’s starting point guard but he conveyed that he believes he will start for the team in October.

The 6-foot-3 veteran would have had to undergo a physical with Toronto before signing his contract with the team.

He averaged 12.6 points, 4.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 0.8 steals per game for the Lakers last season.

Toronto will begin its preseason schedule on October 8.
