The Toronto Raptors have re-signed Jakob Poeltl.

The 7-foot-1 Austrian has reportedly signed a four-year, $80 million contract to remain with Toronto, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal contains a player option in the fourth year.

It’s a hefty price to pay for Toronto but allows Poeltl to hit the $20 million per season figure he’d been expected to sign for. The term is likely a little longer than the Raptors had initially planned to sign Poeltl for, but it allows the organization to retain a key asset moving forward.

Toronto acquired Poeltl at the trade deadline from the San Antonio Spurs for a top-six protected first-round pick, Khem Birch, and multiple second-round picks. He had reportedly been pursued by the Spurs who were considering a reunion with Poeltl, but the Raptors appear to have been able to stave off any outside competition.

While Poeltl’s yearly figures are yet to be reported, the length of the contract should give Toronto a little more wiggle room to stay under the luxury tax this season. He will likely see raises over the course of the contract, meaning the Raptors will have given themselves a little more space to re-sign Fred VanVleet.

Poeltl averaged 12.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting 62.9% from the floor over 72 games split between Toronto and San Antonio.

VanVleet has yet to sign a contract.
