HOUSTON — Dillon Brooks' time as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies is over. As first reported by The Athletic Tuesday morning, the Grizzlies will not re-sign Brooks "under any circumstances" following an embarrassing postseason outing against the Los Angeles Lakers, where Memphis fell in six games.

Brooks will be an unrestricted free agent in July following six seasons with the Grizzlies.

"After his tumultuous end to the season, Brooks was told about the Grizzlies’ decision to move on in exit meetings with team officials in recent days, those sources said. Memphis and Brooks discussed in exit meetings that it’s best for both sides to have a fresh start, sources added," per The Athletic.

Even though Brooks' tenure with the Grizzlies has ended poorly, he has established himself as one of the best defensive wings in the league. The Athletic reported in April that Brooks is a potential free-agent target for the Houston Rockets.

Scouts believe Brooks would make for a great addition due to his defensive versatility. He is one of the top wing defenders in the league, and Brooks' signing would help enhance the Rockets' appalling defense — which has finished near the bottom of the league for the third consecutive year.

Brooks is coming off a season where he averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists. But against the Lakers, Brooks scored an average of 10.3 points on .312/.238/.714 shooting splits.

Brooks was a second-round pick (No. 45 overall) by the Rockets during the 2017 NBA Draft. He was traded to the Grizzlies immediately following the draft selection.
