NBA Mock Draft: Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson to Spurs?

With the playoffs out of reach for the San Antonio Spurs, the next best thing is the NBA Draft. A recent mock draft projects who the Spurs will pick.

Besides winning the 2023 NBA championship, acquiring the likes of superstar-level prospects Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson is quite the consolation prize. Fortunately, the San Antonio Spurs have a shot at either of those tantalizing talents.

Despite holding a 14-44 record, the Spurs have a bright future. For years, the team refused to accept the hard-to-swallow pill to rebuild after the Kawhi Leonard trade blew up their championship chances. Now, with veterans either traded or released from the roster, the Spurs focus on growing the youth and setting themselves up for a franchise-shifting talent in the draft.

Although the NBA lottery is all about odds and luck, Bleacher Report went by the current standings for the sake of the mock draft. Using those modifiers, the Spurs land the No. 2 pick for the exercise.

Although the Spurs don't land the astonishing French prospect in Wembanyama in the mock draft, G League Ignite standout Henderson would provide a much-needed jolt in their 28th-ranked offensive rating. While Devonte' Graham and Tre Jones look like decent guards in the league, there is no question the Spurs need an upgrade for that position.

Henderson's nifty ball-handling skills and athletic ability make for a great combo. Although Wembanyama will likely earn top billing for the 2023 draft, Henderson's play against the French unicorn hints it's not a closed case.

While the mock draft is all theoretical, the draft odds are in the Spurs' favor nonetheless. The last time the Spurs landed a top pick, it changed the franchise and the league. Maybe the next prospect won't turn into a Tim Duncan-like player, but a change is needed in San Antonio, and such a draft position can only help the rebuild.
