Spurs Center Charles Bassey Has 'Blank Slate' After Signing New Contract

The San Antonio Spurs signed Charles Bassey to a four-year, $10.2 million contract earlier this week. Gregg Popovich is excited about what the new deal can bring.

San Antonio Spurs second-year center Charles Bassey is enjoying his All-Star Break with an added sense of security.

Earlier this week, Bassey, 21, signed a four-year, $10.2 million contract with the Spurs after the trade deadline freed up some roster spots for the team.

“He’s just got a lot of potential like a blank slate. He’s got a good size and got some good natural instincts. So as he gets minutes and plays, it’ll be fun to see how it progresses,” head coach Gregg Popovich said in a recent press conference.

In Bassey’s first season in San Antonio, the second-year center has shot 64 percent on his two-point attempts on limited minutes as the Spurs focus on developing their youth.

Bassey played on a two-way deal for the first part of the season, which limited him to 50 regular-season appearances. Now that he's on a standard deal, that limitation has been lifted. This will allow him more playing opportunities as the season comes to a close. On top of that, Bassey is now under contract for next season in a deal that's low-risk, high-reward for both parties.

Now, Bassey gets to fully plant some roots in San Antonio, which allows him to grow even more.
