San Antonio Spurs 'Don't Need True Point Guard' Says Devin Vassell

There are more players than just the point guards on the Spurs who have been effective playmakers for far in the preseason, and that could be a hug advantage.

The San Antonio Spurs finished top five in the entire league last season in team assists per game, and they are looking to further improve on that number this year.

In their preseason win on Wednesday against the Houston Rockets, the Spurs had seven players with at least three assists in the game. Zach Collins led the way with five from the center position.

The Spurs are taking pride in their ability to make the right passes as a team, not just the point guards. Shooting guard Devin Vassell spoke more about this in his postgame interview on Wednesday.

"I don't think we really need a true point guard, everyone can bring the ball up the court" Vassell said. "Everyone can find and get it to the open guy, and a lot of times we're just moving on offense trying to find the right shot."

If the Spurs are able to mix up who brings the ball up the court effectively, it will really force opposing defenses to stay on their toes. Especially if Victor Wembanyama is going to be bringing the ball up the court in some sets, the Spurs will be at a huge advantage.

The Spurs will have one more chance to show this team versatility in the preseason as they play their final game on Friday against the Golden State Warriors. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. in the Chase Center.
