Report: Spurs Narrowing Down Site for New Arena

The San Antonio Spurs have been involved in rumors regarding a new arena, but a recent development could soon make it a reality.

The San Antonio Spurs changed the name of their home arena to the Frost Bank Center this past offseason, but more significant changes could reportedly be on the way.

Per reports from Madison Iszler of the San Antonio Express-News, the Spurs have their sights set on an area for a new venue, which would take the place of the long-standing Institute of Texans Cultures.

"The UT Board of Regents approved a plan to lease or sell the Institute of Texan Cultures property to the city for a 'potential downtown revitalization project' – which sources say is a new arena for the Spurs," Iszler tweeted.

The Institute of Texans Cultures, which is settled right next to San Antonio's famous Tower of The Americas, would put the Spurs right in the heart of downtown and the Riverwalk, thus drawing more money to the new venue. The Spurs' current home at the Frost Bank Center is about a 10-minute drive from downtown without traffic.

The area around the current arena has next to nothing to offer for fans after the game, as a lack of post-game nightlife and restaurant/bar options have been criticized over the years.

Should the Spurs move back downtown to the place they used to call home, fans would be right in the middle of all the action that the city has to offer.

The Spurs (11-48) host the Oklahoma City Thunder (41-17) on Thursday night.
