Spurs' Sidy Cissoko Getting 'Varsity' Minutes in Rookie Season?

Sidy Cissoko's defense could prove to be valuable for the San Antonio Spurs in their rotation immediately.

SAN ANTONIO - I've been impressed with Sidy Cissoko from the moment I laid eyes on him.

The second-round draft pick from France represented himself very well in his introduction to Spurs fans at a press conference at the AT&T Center. I felt for him because we all know that was all about Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs weren't rolling out a River Walk pep rally and made for television press conference that day for Cissoko, yet there he was handling himself like a true pro. The kid eloquently spoke three languages that day and handled riding in the side car on Wemby's introduction day like a mature man.

Still, all that truly matters is ... can the dude play?

There are a bunch of impressive young people I come across including Gen Z'ers in my own family. That doesn't mean I want them guarding the perimeter for the Spurs. Can Cissoko ball? That will be the ultimate tell on whether or not he sticks around in San Antonio.

In his Summer League debut in Sacramento, he locked down No. 2 overall draft pick Brandon Miller and made an impact on both ends of the floor despite not making a shot during the game.

Let's get something clear. I despise overreaction to Summer League games so I wouldn't have panicked had Cissoko played terribly against Miller, but it sure feels better that he didn't. He was great. He may have a role on the "Varsity" this season and goodness knows the Spurs need all the defense they can get after one of their worst seasons on record.
