Spurs Signing Lakers' Austin Reaves Would Be 'Terrific'

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves is a free agent this offseason, and the San Antonio Spurs have reason to sign him.

The 2022-23 NBA season has come to a close and focus is now shifting towards the NBA Draft and subsequent free agency period.

The San Antonio Spurs have about $36 million in cap space to work with, giving them the chance to sign a number of pricey players looking for new homes.

Among those who could make sense for the Spurs is Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves.

"Trying to sign Reaves away from the Los Angeles Lakers would be a terrific move," Bleacher Report writes. "Reaves looked like the Lakers third-best player during the postseason, able to serve a primary ball-handler or off-the-ball threat.

Averaging 16.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists in the playoffs, Reaves reached the double-digit scoring mark in 15 of 16 postseason games, which included seven 20-point games.

However, Reaves, 25, is a restricted free agent and is bound to the Lakers if they choose to match a potential contact from another team. This is where the problems come in for the Spurs, as The Athletic is reporting that the Lakers will match any offer sheet for Reaves up to the $100 million mark.

Once it gets into this range, it could be hard to see the Spurs want to throw even more money at him in a bidding war. But it can't hurt the Spurs to at least try.
