Suns’ Potential Replacement for Chris Paul Revealed

Malcolm Brogdon is reportedly on the Phoenix Suns' radar this offseason to replace Chris Paul

The Phoenix Suns could be on the hunt for a new starting point guard to replace Chris Paul this upcoming offseason.

Despite still being under contract until 2025, the Suns still reportedly have interest in going after Celtics point guard Malcolm Brogdon.

“If Brogdon becomes available, [even with his] injury history, yes the Suns would be interested in Brogdon as a potential replacement for Chris Paul,” Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro said. “I’m not guessing here, we don’t do a lot of guessing. We spend a lot of time talking to people trying to find out but put Brogdon on your list of potential point guards to replace Chris Paul.”

This move would make sense. Brogdon is eight years younger than Paul and is also expected to receive about $8 million less over the next two seasons.

This past season Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the Boston Celtics. Brogdon does not need the ball in his hands as much as Paul does. Phoenix would benefit from more spacing and players who are capable of knocking down threes consistently and that is exactly what Brogdon brings to the table.

This report about Brogdon being a potential target for the Suns’ contradicts NBA insider Chris Haynes report earlier in the week stating that Phoenix does indeed plan on bringing back Paul, and he’s expected to start with the team for the 2023-24 season.

Paul’s full salary will be guaranteed on June 28 if he is not waived.

In Paul’s exit interview he seemed unsure on what his future holds in the Valley.

“My contract not up,” Paul said. “But unfortunately, I’m not the GM or anything like that. We’ll see.”

Picking the right point guard for next year will be an extremely difficult decision for the Suns’ front office. They already have two superstars in Devin Booker and Kevin Durant but need to find a point guard that will complement these two stars well.

Whether they decide to keep Paul or go in a different direction, it is a move that could potentially alter their championship path down the road.
