Ex-Suns Coach Monty Williams Likely to Take Break From NBA

Despite being linked to multiple teams, former Phoenix Suns leader Monty Williams is reportedly expected to step away from coaching for the 2023-24 season.

Former Phoenix Suns’ head coach Monty Williams may need a little break when it comes to coaching in the NBA.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer, Williams “is more likely to take the next season off, with three years and $21 million remaining on his Suns deal, than to return to the sidelines in a new situation.”

It makes sense as to why Williams wants to take a hiatus. He has been coaching the Suns for the past four seasons, with three-of-four times featuring a postseason appearanc including in 2021 when Williams helped lead Phoenix to the NBA Finals.

Despite a successful tenure in Phoenix holding a record of 194-115, two straight series losses in the second round of the playoffs to the Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets was enough for new owner Mat Ishbia to pull the trigger and let go of Williams.

Whenever Williams is ready to get back into the coaching game, there should be teams lined up for his services. Since getting fired by the Suns he has been linked to almost every team searching for a head coach.

NBA Insider Marc Stein reported that the Detroit Pistons offered Williams a “big-money offer” but he still rejected it.

While Williams contemplates his future, the Suns are still searching for a new coach. According to the Athletic’s Shams Charania, Phoenix have narrowed their head coaching search to Nick Nurse, Doc Rivers, Kevin Young, Frank Vogel and Jordi Fernandez.

It should be interesting to see what direction both the Suns and Williams decide to go in the coming weeks.
