Russell Westbrook Exercises $47 Million Player Option With Lakers

Westbrook heads into the final year of his deal with the Lakers.

There are just some moves that are slam dunks.

When you're Russell Westbrook coming up on a player option that will pay you $47 million for the 2022-23 season, that's a fastbreak dunk that may just leave the rim hanging sideways.

Multiple NBA insiders have reported that Westbrook has opted into his player-option for next year, remaining with the Los Angeles Lakers. Westbrook heads into the last year of his contract.

After acquiring Westbrook, the Lakers were underwhelmed by his performances alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. New coach Darvin Ham hopes to help turn the tide in Los Angeles, and that involves the integration of an efficient and healthy Westbrook into the gameplan.

Westbrook, about to turn 34-years-old in November, has already accomplished plenty during his time in the league including the NBA's Most Valuable Player award in 2017. The Lakers are hoping to return to the NBA Finals for their first championship since 2020.

Last season, Westbrook played in 78 games. He averaged 18.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists per contest.

The Phoenix Suns swept the Lakers by winning all four games during the 2021-22 season.
