Suns Assistant Reportedly Takes BYU Job

Kevin Young is taking over a historic college program.

Phoenix Suns associate head coach Kevin Young is reportedly leaving his post to take over the Brigham Young Cougars men's basketball program, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Young, 42, has been an assistant with the Suns since the franchise made a run to the NBA Finals in the 2020-21 season. He was promoted to be the lead assistant to Monty Williams that summer following Willie Green's exit to become the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.

Young had interviewed/been a finalist for many head coaching posts in the last several seasons, including for the Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz, Brooklyn Nets, and the Suns.

Young was a finalist for the Suns' position last summer prior to the hiring of Frank Vogel, but team governor Mat Ishbia offered a significant pay raise to keep him stationed in the Valley rather than following Williams to Detroit.

Young passes up on waiting for an NBA job to take over a storied program in his home state that is entering its second season in the Big 12 Conference - a pay raise is likely coming with this deal as well.

Young will remain with the team through the postseason.

More will follow as details continue to come out.
