NBA Trade Talk: Another Change of Scenery for Grant Williams?

If the Dallas Mavericks are open to moving Grant Williams, the OKC Thunder should consider making a trade for him.

The NBA trade deadline is just weeks away, as every team around the league is evaluating its respective situation and what moves, if any, should be made.

There will be teams that buy and sell, but also those that stay put or even swap interesting pieces that might fit better.

One player who could use a change of scenery and should have interest from opposing teams is Grant Williams of the Dallas Mavericks. Prior to this season, he was considered one of the most impactful players in the league during his time with the Boston Celtics, but has struggled tremendously in the 2023-24 campaign.

The Oklahoma City Thunder could absolutely use a piece like Williams. At 25 years old, he fits OKC’s timeline but also can help the team win today. Again, he is struggling this season but holistically is known for being a reliable perimeter shooter who can pass and rebound well.

Oklahoma City could provide tremendous flexibility to Dallas in its pursuit to build a contender. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are both incredible pieces, but the Mavs need that third star. Whether it’s Pascal Siakam or someone else around the league, the Thunder could act as a third party and give the Mavericks picks or young players to help facilitate that type of deal while acquiring someone like Williams. Given the amount of future draft capital and young players Oklahoma City has, this is a team that could really help any team facilitate a blockbuster deal.

It’s unclear if Dallas would want to sell Grant now given his value is likely at an all-time low, but he simply hasn’t fit with the Mavericks thus far. Perhaps another change of scenery at the deadline could turn things around for him. If he were to get back to being the type of player he was in Boston, he would be a tremendous piece off the bench for the Thunder, especially in the playoffs.
