Thunder basketball is right around the corner. For the first time in a long time, expectations are high and the team has expectations. Even if those expectations aren’t necessarily competing for a championship, they aren’t tanking either. For the last few seasons, Oklahoma City has been projected near the bottom of the NBA, but there’s a change in tone when people speak about this year’s teams.

For the first time since the season ended, fans will finally hear from players and coaches. There’s plenty to touch on after the FIBA World Cup and a big offseason of growth for a handful of core members.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Tuesday that the season will kick off on Monday, Oct. 2 with the 2023-24 Media Day. Head coach Mark Daigneault, who’s an early Coach of the Year favorite, and the team’s players are expected to speak to the media starting at 11 a.m. CT.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey put on a show for their hometown countries over the last month and will be able to detail the improvements added to their game overseas. Both players had to take on a lead guard role and took command during multiple games. The duo could be one of the best backcourts in the NBA this season.

After media day, the team will embark on training camp, which is expected to be extremely competitive this year. Oklahoma City is still over the roster limit, but it appears the team wants to let the players battle it out head-to-head before the season starts. Training camp is the perfect chance to evaluate talent and which skill sets fit the team best.

Following training camp, Oklahoma City will kick off the preseason with a highly anticipated matchup against the San Antonio Spurs. Of course, it’s just preseason, but the Chet Holmgren vs. Victor Wembanyama matchup will be talked about every time the Thunder and the Spurs square off.

A long offseason is almost over, and basketball is finally here.
