Tyrese Haliburton Gets Honest About Warriors Not Drafting Him

Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton would have been fun with Golden State

The benefit of hindsight is always a major theme when discussing NBA decision making, and it's even more prevalent when it comes to the draft. While certain draft choices are questionable right away, many take years to finally reveal their true impact.

For Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton, his draft experience was an interesting one. Selected 12th overall by the Sacramento Kings in 2020, Haliburton was not a star overnight. While the signs of one were there, it wasn't until Haliburton got his own team with the Pacers when he finally broke out as a 20 PPG scorer and 10 APG passer - averages that have now jumped to 24 PPG and 12 APG.

With Haliburton reaching these heights, everyone is now looking back at who could have drafted him. The Golden State Warriors had the second overall pick in that draft, infamously selecting James Wiseman, and could have had Haliburton or several others who would have been better picks.

Speaking with Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, Haliburton was asked if he allowed himself to consider the possibility of being selected by the Warriors.

"Yeah, I did,” Haliburton told Kawakami.  “I was disappointed that they (had) the No. 2 pick because I felt like if they were anywhere out of the top three, I felt like I was going to be the pick.”

Haliburton added, "That workout was like the best workout probably of my life. Felt like I shot the cover off the ball. But I understood at the time there was no way they were going to take me at 2.”

While Haliburton did consider the possibility of joining Golden State, he ultimately got honest in this interview with Kawakami, admitting he knew they wouldn't take him that high.
