Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen will Compete to be the 49ers Backup QB

This week at the NFL Annual Meeting, John Lynch discussed why the 49ers signed both Allen and Dobbs and what the 49ers' vision for them is.

ORLANDO -- The 49ers signed two backup quarterbacks this offseason -- first Brandon Allen, then Joshua Dobbs, while former 49ers backup quarterback Sam Darnold signed with the Minnesota Vikings.

This week at the NFL Annual Meeting, John Lynch discussed why the 49ers signed both Allen and Dobbs and what the 49ers' vision for them is.

LYNCH: "We got Brandon Allen re-signed. We were waiting on Sam Darnold, because Darnold had interest in coming back at some point if a starting opportunity didn't present itself, and good for Sam. Really proud of Sam. He came in for a year, was tremendous. I'm in there early, and Sam was always one of the first guys in and really embraced the opportunity to learn. Sam did a great job. Really excited for him and his opportunity in Minnesota. So then we gathered and decided to get one more option for competition at that position, and Joshua Dobbs is the guy we settled on. We had some competition for him, but were able to get him done and are excited about that.

"Having stability there, it is nice. To have that belief in Brock Purdy, to have that stability and then to have two backups that we're going to let compete for that no. 2 spot -- it seems like that's the trend right now. Everyone is keeping three. That's a change for us, but it's nice to have that stability as well to have three options. It is nice being able to focus on other parts of the roster."
