NFL News: Saints Wide Receiver Michael Thomas to Undergo Offseason Surgery
CINCINNATI — Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas was held without a catch in New Orleans' 30-20 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday.
It turns out there was a good reason why he didn't have any success.
Thomas is expected to have surgery on the torn deltoid and other ankle ligaments this offseason according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The star wide receiver knew it was likely Drew Brees' final season and wanted to help the team make one last Super Bowl run.
"Thomas often wouldn’t practice all week, yet would still play in games, at much less than 100%, and with pain medication," Schefter noted. "The coaches told him even as injured as he was, they were much better off with him than without him. But now will need surgery."
Thomas finished with a career-low 40 receptions for 438 yards in seven games this season. He didn't score a touchdown.
Sunday's game against the Buccaneers was the first time he didn't have a catch.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that Brees will retire at the end of the season. The 42-year-old said he hasn't officially made up his mind, but it sounds like the Saints could have a new quarterback under center next season for the first time since 2006.
