The Denver Broncos are projected to be at least $20 million above the cap for 2024. It's becoming more probable than not that the Broncos will part ways with some longtime veterans who have no guaranteed money left in their contracts.

These releases are likely to happen, even if the Broncos were planning on keeping Russell Wilson for the 2024 season. Denver simply isn't in the position to keep the entire roster intact, particularly after its 2023 free-agent spending spree.

Nick Korte of Over the Cap examined the top 100 possible cut candidates for 2024. Five Broncos made the list: safety Justin Simmons, wide receiver Tim Patrick, defensive tackle D.J. Jones, wide receiver Courtland Sutton, and quarterback Jarrett Stidham.

You can look at the full list to understand the criteria Korte used, but it's important to note that his list isn't an attempt to predict who will be cut. In fact, in many cases, players will be retained, though some could be restructured or have their salaries renegotiated.

In fact, Korte later notes that Simmons and Sutton are more likely to be candidates for extensions or restructures, while Patrick and Jones will likely either have to renegotiate or be released.

Regardless, the Broncos will have some tough decisions to make, and it's likely at least a couple of players could be cut. There's also the possibility the Broncos trade players to gain cap space.

There are other teams in a similar situation as the Broncos. If any of these teams release players, it's possible the Broncos could sign such players to low-cost deals if they think they have some value.

But the Broncos will need to make decisions about their current players first. Once that's done, we may get a better idea about what the team does to improve the roster.
