Broncos Expected to Sign ex-Jaguars QB Blake Bortles, per Report

Chad Jensen

The Denver Broncos aren't sitting on their thumbs. With starting quarterback Drew Lock out for the next 2-6 weeks (likely headed to injured reserve where he'll have to remain for at least three weeks), the Broncos are going to have to roll with Jeff Driskel as the starter.

But GM John Elway is bringing in another fail-safe, just in case. Per Mike Klis of 9NEWS, the Broncos are bringing in former Jacksonville Jaguars first-round pick Blake Bortles with the intention of signing him.

"Per sources, plan is for Blake Bortles to go through virus testing and quarantine protocols until Friday, when he can join the team. Broncos are expected to sign Bortles. And it's not out of question he's active as No. 2 QB to Jeff Driskel on Sunday vs Tampa Bay," Klis tweeted Tuesday morning.

Bortles spent last year with the L.A. Rams but originally entered the NFL as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 draft with the Jags. He mostly failed to live up to his draft pedigree, though the Jags' 2017 season was punctuated with an efficient, if uninspiring performance from Bortles.

He's played in some big game, though. The Broncos could do worse as Driskel's stop-gap.

I'm not sure there's enough time for Bortles to jump through the testing hoops in time to be ready for Week 3 vs. Tampa. We'll see.

If he's not, second-year QB Brett Rypien can be called up from the practice squad to hold down the backup fort.

Thats what 10 or 11 QB's since 2014. Maybe the problems not the QBs? Hint: Elway you need pass protection. This ain't the 90's anymore. Its a passing league now, just saying

You're saying that as if Elway hasn't made attempts to upgrade the O-Line. It's just unfortunate that outside of Dalton Risner and Mike Munchak, all of his swings have been misses. Good O-Line doesn't come easy in the NFL and I'd say all but about 5 teams have bad pass protection. Most of the QB's have sucked. We're at a point where Trevor Siemian was still the winningest QB the Broncos have had since PFM.

I suppose Bortles does make some sense as a backup QB. Apparently, Elway
didn't want to sign Rypien to the roster for the season and is signing Bortles instead.

After Lock comes back he needs to try to execute his throws and plays better to win games. I wouldn't be to surprised if Driskel puts up some wins and creates a QB controversy.

The thing to keep in mind about Blake Bortles is that he will be on a "week to week" salary, meaning as long as the Broncos don't give him any guaranteed money (and there's no reason to think they would), they can cut him at any point they want.

The vested veteran rule doesn't apply to veterans who are signed to the roster after Week 1 games are played.

Yep the carousel spins on the sad truth is the way this season is going the Broncos might end up with the first pick in the draft have Trevor Lawrence sitting right there and Elway will pick the top pass rusher! He would find some way to knock Lawrence and justify not taking him saying I really like the QB’s we got you know the same old song and dance.

Bortles has played with some savvy at times. Rypien must not have the confidence of the team.

This is not the first time that Diskel and Bortles will meet. They both come from Oviedo Florida, a suburb of Orlando and were crosstown rivals. Driskel at Hagerty High school in Oviedo and Bortles at Oviedo High School. They graduated the same year and were both excellent passers.

Mr. Elway reminds me of a Boss I had once. In his mind he was the best Club Managers in the history of the world and no one could manage a club as good as he. Therefore, any person who was hired as Club Manager was screwed. Didn't live up to the standards of the Boss.
