Russell Wilson Shares True Thoughts on His Place With Broncos
While the Denver Broncos have made it no secret what their soon-to-come plans are surrounding Russell Wilson, the quarterback himself seems as if he'd have it differently if things went his way.
It's practically a foregone conclusion that Wilson will end up on the open market sometime this offseason, with a predicted release from the Broncos set on the horizon. Regardless of the writing on the wall, Russ still has his eyes set on the ultimate goal of bringing another Super Bowl to the Mile High for the first time since 2015.
Wilson went onto the I Am Athlete podcast to discuss his NFL future with Brandon Marshall, where he voiced his desire to continue to stay in Denver long-term, as well as dropping his goal to win two more Super Bowls in the next five seasons:
"I've got more fire now than ever, honestly. Especially over the past two years what I've gone through. Whether it's in Denver or somewhere else, I hope it's in Denver. I hope I get to finish there. I committed there. I wanted to be there. For me, it's about winning. Over the next five years, I want to win two [Super Bowls]. I want to feel the chill of that trophy again. I love the city and everything else, but you also want to be in a place that wants you too. The thing I want to do is win, man. That's all I care about."
Despite the past few months of constant turmoil and unrest in Denver, Wilson has yet to pivot off his stance of wanting to stay in the orange and blue. It even comes after the messy ending of last season when Sean Payton opted to bench Russ for the final two games of the year for Jarrett Stidham.
Wilson ended the season appearing in 15 games, where he posted 3,070 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions on a 66.4% completion rate. It resulted in a 7-8 record for the Broncos, who would end up missing the postseason for the eighth season in a row.
Wilson's claims of wanting to stay put may come as a surprise, but the Broncos in all likelihood will still cut the 9x Pro Bowler in the coming weeks, inevitably taking on the massive dead cap number that would come their way as a result. According to Over The Cap, Denver would take on a historic $85 million hit if Russ gets cut before June 1st.
If/when Denver decides to part ways with Russ, it doesn't quite mean it's a wrap on his career. Recent reports detail that teams around the NFL still view him with the potential of being a starting signal caller on a league-minimum deal. Betting odds currently place the Pittsburgh Steelers as the leader in the clubhouse to acquire his services, but the jury is still out on what's next for Wilson.
Whether it's in Denver or not, expect Russ to remain hungry in his pursuit of a Lombardi as he eyes what will be his 13th-year pro in the 2024 NFL season.
