Kyler Murray Still Unsure When He'll Return

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray still doesn't know when he'll be back on the field again.

GLENDALE -- Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is on the practice field with the team as they begin to work through training camp, though his rehab from a torn ACL late in 2022 has kept him in street clothes as his teammates get ready for the upcoming season.

The mystery of Murray's return from such a significant injury has kept fans and media guessing as to when the quarterback will return to action. The Cardinals have been adamant they won't rush their franchise passer back into the mix, though in a recent episode of the team's YouTube series "Flight Plan", Murray said he was trying to come back for Week 1 of the regular season.

That was weeks ago - and when we spoke with Murray for the first time all offseason after Saturday's practice, no updated timeline was available.

"It's a great question. I have no answer for you, though. I take it one day at a time. Like I said, I don't have a timetable or whatever. But yeah, just taking it one day at a time," said Murray when asked how close he was to returning.

"Obviously me being the competitor I am, do I want to miss any time? No, it's not on my mind. But we're not even in August yet so I've taken it one day at a time."

Before Murray can return to the field, he'll have to go through practice to ensure he's ready on both a physical and mental level. Murray was placed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list ahead of camp, and doesn't have an updated timetable on when he'll be practicing.

"No idea. I've never dealt with this. I've never dealt with this, so I couldn't really tell you," said Murray.

There's been plenty of outside noise on what the Cardinals could or couldn't do next offseason, particularly at Murray's position. He said he hasn't felt any pressure to return by a certain point, nor does he have any number of games he would like to play in 2023:

"I wouldn't want to go out there and hurt the team or hurt myself. The advice I've gotten from a lot of people around me is obviously to go when you're ready. Don't listen to outside noise. Don't feel pressured to come back because of this situation or that situation," said Murray. "Whenever you're ready, you'll know you're ready. Like I said, I haven't dealt with this but when that time comes, I feel like I'll know"

Murray's progression has been updated to fans and media via social media. Months ago he posted a video of him squatting significant weight before it was revealed on "Flight Plan" he was running upwards of 15 mph, his father revealed.

Murray said the next step has been change of direction work.

"It's ramping up. It's ramping up. We're doing we're doing multiple stuff, cutting. Getting closer to football," he said.

The 15+ minute press conference concluded with Murray being asked about the challenge of the monotony of rehabbing the same injury every day.

"It hasn't been challenging at all. I get to do what I love every day - play quarterback in the NFL. Did I get hurt? Yeah. Did I experience something that no one wants to experience? Yeah. But it's nothing for me to get up and workout every day, I already was doing that before I got hurt," said Murray.

"So the fact that 'Oh, now I'm rehabbing a knee. Cool.' For me [the goal] is to get back to who I was and be able to play at a higher level. So I'm excited."
