Chargers News: Fresh Mock Draft Sees LA Making Move To Acquire Familiar Face For Jim Harbaugh

The Los Angeles Chargers have an established quarterback on their roster already, but one new mock draft put together a scenario that would have them sending him away. Justin Herbert has become one of the better signal-callers in the NFL over the last few years, but his new contract extension does take up a ton of cap space.

Herbert signed a five-year, $262.5 million extension with the Bolts before last season. The front office has worked on cutting cap room this offseason and Herbert could be next, according to this new NFL mock draft. Jess Root of Cards Wire has the Bolts sending Herbert to the Minnesota Vikings.

"In this first-round mock draft, we play out a scenario in which he decided he wants to coach McCarthy again. They select him fifth overall and then trade Justin Herbert to the Minnesota Vikings."

The Chargers would pick up the No. 11 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, while also acquiring a first-round pick in 2025. While this is a decent haul, moving Herbert would likely require more draft capital or players from the Vikings.

If this scenario did play out, the Bolts would select quarterback J.J. McCarthy from The University of Michigan with the No. 11 pick. McCarthy would be reunited with new head coach Jim Harbaugh, which doesn't seem all too crazy.

With the No. 11 pick, the Bolts would take offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga from Oregon State University. He would give McCarthy extra protection along the offensive line, something Harbaugh has been known to build out.

Harbaugh has talked up McCarthy leading up to the NFL Draft, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that the Bolts could look into this move. However, trading Herbert would be a risky move for the franchise and one that would come as a big surprise.
