With the NFL Draft looming just 20 days away, all eyes are on the Los Angeles Chargers and their coveted fifth overall pick. In a draft class brimming with talent, the Chargers find themselves in a prime position to make a significant impact with their selection.

However, despite holding a top-tier pick, the Chargers also have a multitude of pressing needs to address, including wide receiver, defensive interior, and linebacker.

One notable aspect of this year's draft class is the abundance of quarterback talent. With many teams in need of a franchise quarterback, it's anticipated that several signal-callers will be selected within the top 10 picks. However, the Chargers find themselves in a unique position as they do not require a quarterback, presenting them with an opportunity to leverage their pick through a trade.

One potential trade partner that stands out is the Minnesota Vikings. Despite signing Sam Darnold in the offseason, the Vikings' quarterback situation remains unresolved, and they are in the market for a long-term solution. As such, the Vikings could offer an enticing package to the Chargers in exchange for their fifth overall pick. According to PFF's Brad Spielberger, this could include the Vikings' 11th and 23rd overall picks in this year's draft, along with a third-round pick in the 2023 draft.

Trading back with a team like the Vikings could provide the Chargers with additional draft capital to address their various needs. While the Chargers certainly require a wide receiver, it's worth noting that general manager Joe Hortiz and head coach Jim Harbaugh have emphasized a desire to prioritize the running game and dominate the trenches. As such, instead of targeting a flashy wide receiver with their fifth pick, the Chargers could opt to trade back and select an elite offensive tackle from this year's deep class.

While it's not a foregone conclusion that the Chargers will pursue this trade-back strategy, it aligns with the track record of Hortiz and Harbaugh. Their track record suggests a preference for building a strong foundation upfront to protect quarterback Justin Herbert and establish a formidable ground game. Thus, while the need for a wide receiver is evident, it wouldn't be surprising if the Chargers prioritized bolstering their offensive line through trading back in the draft.

Ultimately, the decision regarding their draft strategy will depend on various factors, including the offers they receive and their assessment of the available talent. However, considering the Chargers' emphasis on building a dominant offensive line, trading back to acquire additional picks and select an elite tackle prospect could be a prudent move that aligns with their long-term vision.
