Chargers News: Gus Edwards Changing Jersey Number With LA

New team, new number.

New Los Angeles Chargers running back Gus Edwards is switching numbers after joining the Chargers on a two-year deal during free agency this year. Edwards previously wore No. 35 during his time on the Baltimore Ravens from 2018-2023, and will now wear No. 4 on the Chargers.

No one on the Chargers wore the No. 35 last year and the number is not retired by the team, but Edwards switching to a single-digit number follows a recent trend of more running backs and wide receivers opting for these numbers since the number rule change in 2021.

The No. 4 has previously been worn by one significant Charger — new head coach Jim Harbaugh. Back when Harbaugh played for the Chargers as a quarterback from 1999-2000, he donned the same jersey number Edwards will take.

Edwards comes to the Chargers after a successful tenure with the Ravens, in which he primarily played as part of a committee backfield. Edwards is coming off his best season statistically of his pro career, in which he set career highs in carries, yards and touchdowns with 198 carries for 810 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Along with Edwards, the Chargers also announced that free agent additions tight end Will Dissly will wear No. 81, TE Hayden Hurst will take No. 88, center Bradley Bozeman will take No. 75, and linebacker Troy Dye will wear No. 43.
