Chargers News: Experts Break Down LA's Miserable Passing Defense Against Chiefs

Another bad week for them.

The Kansas City Chiefs once again showed your Los Angeles Chargers why they've been perennial AFC West division champs with Patrick Mahomes in their Week 7 matchup.

The quarterback dominated with a 400 passing yards and four touchdown performance against LA's shoddy zone defense and sent LA to a 2-4 record.

Many players are to blame for the winnable game going by the wayside but one expert dissected the play of the Bolts' secondary after another brutal loss.

The decision to “populate” — coach Brandon Staley’s word — the middle of the field and play more zone against Kansas City in the first half was a disaster as evidenced by Travis Kelce’s first-half dominance. The game plan was ill-fated to start and then exposed as the wrong approach almost immediately Sunday. The fact it took until the second half for the Chargers to solve the problem was quite damning.

Derwin James keyed in on the poor scheme that doomed the Chargers but another expert said that LA should've been in the game regardless.

Far be it for me to correct Derwin James, who understands the inner workings of that defense much, much better than I do. But it would seem Mahomes is going to beat you whether you plan zone or man, and it might get lopsided much more quickly if you’re in man. The Chargers were within striking range for most of that game, and against the best player in football, that’s saying something.

Mahomes showed just why he's the best quarterback in the league but LA's offense also shares some of the blame for the loss with a dismal second half.

All 53 players on Brandon Staley's roster now stare at a 2-4 record as the head coach's seat becomes hotter as this disappointing year rolls on.
