Chiefs Trade Down From Pick No. 178, Land Future Selection

Kansas City moves down from its first sixth-round slot and recoups a pick for later on.

The Kansas City Chiefs made five picks in the first five rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft, opting for three defensive players and two offensive players. With the first of his two slated sixth-round selections to work with, general manager Brett Veach went against opening up the sixth round with the first pick and instead traded with the Dallas Cowboys.

In their first trade-down of the 2023 draft cycle, the Chiefs sent the 178th overall pick to the Cowboys. The Chiefs tweeted out an announcement on the move:

In return for pick No. 178 in this year's draft, Kansas City is getting a 2024 fifth-round offering from the Cowboys in return. Earlier on Saturday, the Chiefs shipped their own 2024 fifth-rounder to the Minnesota Vikings in order to move up and select Virginia Tech defensive back Chamarri Conner. The move allowed them to jump 15 spots in this year's draft, and the sixth-round trade with Dallas now gets a future fifth-rounder back on the board for 2024.

Per Pro Sports Transactions' list of future draft pick status for NFL teams, the Chiefs own their own picks in rounds one, two, three and four for the 2024 NFL Draft. They have Dallas's pick now in round five, then their own sixth-round selection. A 2024 conditional seventh-round selection from the Houston Texans in the Lonnie Johnson trade is listed, although it "may or may not transfer depending on unknown conditions."

As of their swap with the Cowboys, Kansas City owns pick Nos. 194 (sixth round) and 250 (seventh round) to close out their 2023 draft haul. Previous picks include Kansas State defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah (1.31), SMU wide receiver Rashee Rice (2.55), Oklahoma offensive tackle Wanya Morris (3.92), Conner and Stephen F. Austin defensive end BJ Thompson (5.166).
