Three Takeaways From the Chiefs' Overtime Win Against the Chargers

After a lackluster performance, the Kansas City Chiefs were able to sneak out of SoFi Stadium with a 23-20 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Arrowhead Report's Tucker Franklin gives his takeaways from the game.

After a lackluster performance, the Kansas City Chiefs were able to sneak out of SoFi Stadium with a 23-20 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Although it wasn't at all pretty, the Chiefs move to 2-0 on the season and win their first two games for the fourth straight season.

Arrowhead Report's Jordan Foote and I broke down the game on today's Roughing the Kicker podcast where we dive deep into what went right and what went wrong for the Chiefs but here are three of my takeaways.

1. The offensive line needs to be better

I get it, I really do. The Chargers have a great pass rush. It's not every week the Chiefs will face a team that has that many elite pass rushers. So I'm not totally ready to abandon the Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher ship. They had a tough job and they got beat more than usual. Patrick Mahomes' deep dropbacks didn't help the tackles' cause either. It's not every week you face a pass rush like Los Angeles' so I think ultimately the Chiefs will be fine.

2. Stopping the run was a problem

Kansas City came into the game with a depleted line and it only got worse as the game went on. Frank Clark left the game with an illness and Alex Okafor was ruled out for the game along with Khalen Saunders. By the second half, Chris Jones was the only starter left on the line. Injuries to the linebacking core also hurt the Chiefs as running backs continued to have their way on the ground. With Mike Pennell coming back this week, it could be a step in the right direction for stopping the run.

3. The Chiefs can win ugly

Not every win is going to be perfectly executed or a blowout. The parody in the NFL is why everyone loves it. On any given Sunday, any team can pull out a victory. The ability for the Chiefs to come away with a win after playing poorly for a half separates them from the pack. We knew coming into the season Kansas City had the capability of performing comebacks but this win showed they can still get a "W" when they aren't at their best.
