Colts Host Former Texans, Broncos Free Agent Safety

The Indianapolis Colts might be interested in a former division rival at the safety position.

The Indianapolis Colts have shown interest in former Houston Texans and Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson, per Cardswire NFL reporter Howard Balzer.

Balzer posted on X: "Lions UFA QB Nate Sudfeld visited with the team today. Texans UFA S Kareem Jackson visited the Colts, while Ravens UFA RB J.K. Dobbins visited the Chargers."

The Colts need additional help at the safety position and appear to be looking the way of Jackson. Jackson is an experienced veteran who has 14 years in the league, but he's also pushing 36 years of age and could only have a few years left in the NFL. With a safety group consisting notably of Nick Cross, Rodney Thomas II, and Trevor Denbow, Jackson’s fit is an interesting one to think about until a better option is brought in.

Despite his age, Jackson had a decent year in 2023 and showed consistency in coverage. Per Pro Football Focus, Jackson notched a 75.1 mark. He also tacked on 53 tackles, two interceptions, and three passes defended. Throughout his long career, Jackson has 954 tackles, 110 passes defended, 22 interceptions, and three defensive touchdowns.

Could Jackson be better than his age indicates? It's interesting for this to be the first thing heard about the Colts having an interest in a safety in quite some time. Indianapolis will still likely draft a safety in April but might do so after signing a veteran like Jackson.

Free agency is just well underway and Chris Ballard has decisions to make ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
