Sam Howell is officially the Washington Commanders’ starting quarterback, and one guy who’s been there - former NFL star Robert Griffin III - has a positive view on what it can mean to the franchise’s playoff chase in the NFC East.

The short version of Griffin’s take? “Don’t sleep on the Washington Commanders, man!”

Howell has been impressive in his path to being the team's starting quarterback … despite his one starting sample in his rookie season of 2022, when in the finale he helped beat the Dallas Cowboys.

The 22-year-old Howell’s good work continued on Monday during the team's Week 2 win against the Baltimore Ravens in preseason. In 29-28 victory, he completed 19 of his 25 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

And that helped prompt the hot take from Griffin, himself a former Washington signal-caller.

“DON'T SLEEP on the Washington Commanders man. The offensive weapons will certainly make Sam Howell’s job easier, but Howell has the talent to MAXIMIZE HIS OPPORTUNITY as QB1. New OC Eric Bieniemy likes his ability paired with all the versatile playmakers with SPEED and SKILL the Commanders have,” Griffin shouted on Twitter.

Does Howell's fine offseason - in which he held off vet Jacoby Brissett on the way to winning the nod from coach Ron Rivera - mean Washington is suddenly able to joust with the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants in the East.

Maybe that’s a dream - but as Robert Griffin III insists … it’s something to keep Commanders fans awake while thinking positive thoughts..
