BREAKING: Commanders Cut All-Pro Ex Andrew Norwell
The Washington Commanders are officially moving on from Andrew Norwell.
According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Commanders are cutting Norwell just before the team begins training camp.
Norwell was placed on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) List back in May, so he was not occupying a roster spot.
Norwell built on an All-Pro season in 2017 and has been a consistent starter for almost a decade. But Washington is working to rid itself of $4.4 million in salary here.
Norwell, 31, started 16 games for the Commanders last season and committed just four penalties, but the offensive line is in need of some upgrades after surrendering the seventh-most sacks in the NFL last season.
Washington may feel it has options that could be ready to play this season that are cheaper than Norwell, like free-agent signee Nick Gates or third-year pro Sam Cosmi.
Norwell was entering the final year of his contract, so he wasn't seen as a long-term option for the Commanders anyway, but he's a veteran that doesn't make mistakes very often. Norwell committed just four penalties last year and could be a strong veteran presence for the new offensive linemen.
Washington in the end overspent on the signing and now, it means the end for Norwell's stint with the Commanders.
