The Washington Commanders have been clear Jacoby Brissett will likely not start in Week 1, but that just makes him one of the league's premiere backups.

The Washington Commanders and Ron Rivera have opted to go with Sam Howell as the team's starting quarterback in Week 1, and that leaves Jacoby Brissett playing second fiddle to the sophomore.

However, Brissett's spot on the pine makes him one of the league's best backup signal-callers. Former NFL head coach Marty Morninwheg ranked Brissett No. 4 in his backup quarterback list.

"Brissett is 30, and he’s got an 84.4 passer rating in 48 starts in his seven-year career. He’s one of the more experienced backups," Morninwheg writes at The 33rd Team.

Once regarded as a blooming star following a hot start in New England, Brissett has played seven years in the league and amassed 10,350 passing yards, 48 touchdowns and 23 picks with four franchises.

"His 48-23 touchdown-to-interception ratio is pretty good. He still possesses good movement and running ability. Brissett has proven he can come in and win games. He’s one of the top 32 quarterbacks in the NFL and should be starting somewhere," reads the The 33rd team evaluation.

The "somewhere" Brissett should be starting may be Washington in 2023. ... depending on how Howell fares.

Now working for his fifth franchise, the veteran has put himself squarely in the fight for playing time with the Commanders. And Rivera has gone back and forth on the status of the quarterback situation past Week 1. Yet Brissett has been clear; he's in the fight.

"I wouldn’t be here if it was something else,” Brissett told PFT. “If I thought otherwise, then I’d have a problem."

The top-10 ranking has the New York Giants' Tyron Taylor at the top. The Dallas Cowboys backup to Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush, is ranked third.
