Commanders ‘Not Considering’ Move to Old Name

Speaking on matters related to the changing environment around the Washington Commanders, team president Jason Wright says the old name isn't coming back.

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Commanders got a new ownership group to help usher in the new season and a new era of DMV football.

What many Commanders fans are hoping is that managing partner Josh Harris and his group featuring the likes of Mitch Rales and Earvin 'Magic' Johnson also usher in a new team name.

More specifically, many want the new team name to be the old one, and while we're at it let's move the franchise back to its old stomping grounds at the site of RFK Stadium.

"Commanders team president Jason Wright says that the team will not consider going back to the old team name," JP Finlay of 106.7 The Fan tweeted Wednesday. "'It is not being considered. Period.'"

Well, that's one way to douse the fires of excitement, at least in one arena.

The spark of hope that Washington might revert to its old name first ignited when Harris mentioned the name of old multiple times in his initial comments after buying the team.

Not only did Harris mention the name, and being proud of the history attached to it, in his introductory press conference but he did it again during pep rallies and future appearances.

Then a petition circulating collected over 100,000 signatures imploring the team to do exactly what most close to the team said would never happen.

And now, the team president has not just implied it, he's said it. And he added a period to it.

Finality is spoken, but not the end of this discussion by a long shot. At least outside of Commanders Park.
