Commanders' Logan Thomas Now 'Fully Healthy' in 'Tight End Friendly Offense'

Eric Bieniemy and the Washington Commanders will use the tight end in spades this fall, and a healthy Logan Thomas will contribute greatly.

The Washington Commanders were enamored with tight end Logan Thomas following his career-best season during his first campaign with the team in 2020. But injuries have buried Thomas ever since.

Heading into 2023, though, the veteran tight end is at full health and cutting with ease, ready to put a 2021 ACL tear and 2022 calf issue behind him.

"Thomas looked comfortable throughout the Commanders' OTAs and minicamp this offseason," according to commanders.com. "He quickly became a favorite target of Sam Howell particularly in the red zone because of his size and reliable hands."

Thomas caught 39 passes last season for 323 yards and a score over the course of 13 starts and 14 games, seldomly targeted in the passing game. Though that all changes in 2023 under coach Eric Bieniemy.

"Bieniemy is used to having a tight end be a key piece of the offense, as Travis Kelce has routinely been one of the league's best pass-catchers," commanders.com wrote. "Thomas likely won't put up numbers similar to Kelce this season, but he can still have a positive impact on the unit if he's close to the numbers he had in 2020."

During that healthy 2020 season, Thomas played in all 16 games and caught 72 balls for 670 yards and six touchdowns — his only season over 500 yards and enough touchdowns to equal his other six years in the NFL combined.

If he can once again make that step, it's free game for Thomas to become Howell's second-favorite target behind Terry McLaurin.
