Commanders Need to Draft Another QB in 2024; Sam Howell, Jacoby Brissett Just 'Short-Term'?

The Washington Commanders are listed in Blecher Report's top-10 most likely teams to be drafting high in 2023.

The Washington Commanders don't have a proven answer at the quarterback position going into the 2023 season.

That's why they are one of the unlucky 10 NFL squads to be included in Bleacher Report's predictive article of needs for teams projected to be drafting at the top in 2024

In the piece, Washington is listed as the final team in the conversation of high draft picks, but its listed there nonetheless. And projected needs for the Commanders include edge, tight end, quarterback, offensive tackle and cornerback.

"Two storylines will define the Washington Commanders' needs," Bleacher Report writes. "The hope is [Howell] becomes the undisputed starter and settles the position for many years. Otherwise, the Commanders will turn to Jacoby Brissett—another short-term stop-gap—and look for a QB in the 2024 draft."

The word to key in on here is 'another,' when referring to Brissett as a temporary option. This insinuates Howell is the same, a quarterback band-aid on a signal caller bullet hole.

"Washington declined its fifth-year option on Chase Young and hasn't reached an extension with Montez Sweat. If either one does not return, edge-rusher soars on the priority list," Bleacher Report said.

And this has been a major talking point in even the last two weeks: what does the future look like for Young, and is he on the trade block? The future is also foggy when it comes to veterans like tight end Logan Thomas and cornerback Kendall Fuller. The futures of veteran players lies is still dependent on 2023's outcomes. If the organization truly finds itself drafting in the top 10, a rebuild could be at hand. In that case, every position may soon become a need.
