It's finally here! The 2019 NFL season kicked off tonight with a clash between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, and man does it feel good. While the old-timey foes face off in Chicago tonight, the Washington Redskins are just a few short days away from their first real game action, when on Sunday afternoon they'll take on the Philadelphia Eagles in an early season NFC East match-up. Beat the Eagles, and the Redskins will be in first place in the NFC East, taking their first step toward upsetting the apple-cart. The team will be lead by first-string quarterback Case Keenum, who just can't stop winning starting jobs, everywhere his rambling heart takes him. While Keenum is under center, head coach Jay Gruden made it clear Thursday that it's Derrius Guice who'll be shouldering the load for the Redskins offense, here-forward.

The Redskins still await the return of Trent Williams, but with off-season acquisitions of Donald Penn and Ereck Flowers they've given themselves a shot in the arm on the left side of their offensive line. Flowers is ready to re-write his career script, finally finding his happy place at left guard. The Redskins hope to tap on naturally gifted big man as they look to get Guice going.

Case Keenum is an unwanted QB who keeps winning jobs. He ‘wouldn’t have it any other way.’ :: The Washington Post

Keenum is a survivor. He's played for 5 NFL teams, and somehow seems to keep winning starting jobs everywhere he goes. He starts the 2019 season as the Redskins' starter, with Dwayne Haskins Jr. looming in the wings. Kudos to Keenum on doing it again, but let's hope its just a short stay in the top spot in Washington.

"The words most often used with his name are “journeyman,” “placeholder” and “backup.” In seven NFL seasons he’s gone from the Texans to the Rams to the Texans to the Rams to the Vikings to the Broncos and now to Washington. His reputation is certainly not of a talented passer who can rip apart a defense. This summer, a former NFL head coach chuckled when asked about the Redskins’ quarterback competition.

“Let’s put it this way: I never spent any nights lying awake worrying about Case Keenum,” the coach said."

Ereck Flowers glad to be a guard now, not a “villain" :: Yahoo Sports

Flowers has had his name kicked around since he entered the NFL out of Miami. The long-time Giants left tackle has been handed his lunch by opposing defensive ends continually during his career, but he's ready to put forward a new foot. The Redskins signed Flowers with an eye on pulling out the promising talent he once flashed, and they've found a home for him at left guard, where Flowers is happy to get his restart.

“I didn’t have anger,” he said. “I just wanted a fresh start. For me, football has been more enjoyable here. I’m just trying to refine my game, get rid of bad habits, and create some good ones, especially at a new position.”

Jay Gruden: Redskins' defense has chance 'to be special'

Gruden identifies that the offense is a work in progress, but points out specifically that the defense has a real shot to be real good this year. Led by veterans like Josh Norman and Ryan Kerrigan, the Redskins defense can hold its own. They'll get their first big test with the haughty Eagles offense in Week 1.

"Defensively, we have a chance to be special," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. "If we have to win 17-13, we'll win 17-13 with a great defense."

Guice will get 'mother load' of carries, Peterson whatever's left

"You like apples? How 'bout them apples?" Guice, who was in line to start in 2018 before suffering a torn ACL, has battled back and won the right to be the primary ball carrier heading into the 2019 regular season. Redskins fans and fantasy football players alike will delight in the update straight from the mouth of head coach Jay Gruden.

"Initially when we get going, I think you have to start with the first back. You start the game on offense (that's) starting with Derrius Guice From there, we'll see where it goes."

Fantasy owners might drool when they hear what Jay Gruden said about Derrius Guice :: NBC Sports

Breaking down Gruden's comments even further from a fantasy football perspective, it sounds like Guice is going to be gold for team owners that drafted him in the mid-to-late rounds.

"The big thing is we get somebody ready for the mother load and everybody else is ready for whatever else they can get," the coach said.

The biggest indicator of potential points scored in fantasy is touches. Having a young running back in a potentially run-heavy offense, carrying the "mother load" is as good as it gets.

Dan Snyder's Tenure As Redskins Owner Examined Ahead Of Season :: Sports Business Daily (Pay-wall)

In 1999 Snyder took over one of the most successful, most beloved franchises in football. It was the team he grew up watching, loving, scheming to buy. Unfortunately for Redskins fans, and perhaps Snyder himself, he did. While the NFL celebrates its 100th anniversary, Snyder celebrates his 30th as owner of the Redskins. In that time he's spent big, and won little, but that might all be about to change.

USAA Salute to Service Moment: Redskins vs. Ravens :: Washington Redskins

While the Redskins don't play in Washington D.C., they do play in the heart of America's political pulse. And while things are almost always divided, neighbor to neighbor, even brother to brother, one thing everyone agrees on is their thankfulness to the men and women of the Armed Forces. During their August 28th game against the Baltimore Ravens, the Redskins hosted and paid tribute to SPC Devin Dotson and SGT Evan McIntosh, who were chosen by USAA to participate in the USAA Salute to Service Moment.
