Are Dallas Cowboys 'Deep Sleepers' For Super Bowl in 2024?

The Dallas Cowboys haven't had a good start to the offseason, but that hasn't stopped CBS Sports from having faith in what the team can do next season.

For most fans, the Dallas Cowboys and Super Bowl don't belong in the same sentence after the franchise's glacier-slow approach to free agency, not to mention the catalog of players who have walked out the door with no replacements aside from linebacker Eric Kendricks.

While the Cowboys have seen several roster holes get even wider during the first couple of weeks during free agency, they still have the nucleus of a good roster.

Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons are in the top 10 in the league at their positions, while the likes of Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland, DeMarcus Lawrence and Brandin Cooks all offer a high level of productivity.

But as things stand, is that even for Dallas to compete for a Super Bowl? We find that hard to fathom, but in a fun exercise by CBS Sports, in listing the teams who could stop the Kansas City Chiefs from claiming their third straight Super Bowl win, Dallas falls into the "Deep Sleeper" category along with the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons.

"The Dallas Cowboys still have some of the game's top playmakers on both sides of the ball, but Dak Prescott's offensive line has more questions than at any point in recent memory," CBS Sports writes. "And this franchise has long succumbed to big-game hurdles."

You will be hard-pressed to find a Cowboys fan that thinks with the current shape of the roster that a Super Bowl is within reach. After having a loaded roster last season, that is starting to feel like "the one" for Dak Prescott and Co. to finally get it done in the postseason.

Now, with a host of starters leaving and roster holes everywhere you look, playoffs seem a tough ask right now, let alone a Super Bowl tilt.

Of course, the Cowboys could still add some low-priced free agents, coupled with their draft haul, but with Prescott's looming $55 million cap hit for the season without an extension, there will be little wriggle room to improve the roster.

There can be no denying that Dallas' roster is worse than the one that was curb-stomped by the Green Bay Packers in the Wildcard Round of the playoffs last season.

Still armed with some firepower, the free agency losses and lack of want to replace them, along with Prescott's current contract situation, there is little if any optimism about what Dallas can do in 2024.

Which makes the Cowboys being in the "sleeper" category feel about right.

Three 12-5 win seasons, and then what has transpired this offseason, the Cowboys are now a "sleeper" for the Super Bowl, not a contender - how the mighty have fallen.
