Could Cowboys WR return for Packers? Michael Gallup Watch begins today

FRISCO - Jerry Jones has fun with the media when medical issues arise, the Dallas Cowboys owner often using the self-effacing nickname "Dr. Jones.'' But when it comes to optimism regarding the rehab of receiver Michael Gallup playing Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, Dr. Jones' prognosis is based in fact.

Indeed, I'm told that even though today is a players' day off here at The Star, Gallup -- who has missed two games after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery and was thought to be out for a few weeks -- will be working with the coaching staff and the medical team to test his progress.

And if Gallup is OK today? He might be OK to practice at some point this week. And yes, he might even be OK to play on Sunday.

Another of Jerry's nicknames (courtesy of me) is "Jerry Poppins,'' the result of his natural-born optimism causing him to shove spoonfuls of sugar down the throats of Cowboys Nation. But in this case, the optimism about Gallup, who is emerging as a legit threat in complementing top receiver Amari Cooper and QB Dak Prescott, is real.

And it's real because "Dr. Jones'' is getting his informational updates from the Cowboys actual medical team.

The same thing goes for Tyron Smith, the left tackle who on Monday at The Star was still wearing his walking boot to aid with the ankle sprain sustained at the end of Sunday's loss at New Orleans. The Cowboys view Smith as "week-to-week,'' and while he is certain to miss the Packers game, could return soon after that.

Dallas, 3-1, is like any other club, needing all hands on deck. The Packers have their own injury issue at receiver, where stat Davante Adams has a toe injury and seems unlikely to be available. So Adams might miss ... and Gallup might play?

“We’ve just got to see how it goes out there (Wednesday), especially,'' Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, "and just take a look at him.''

Again, all true, no "Jerry Poppins.'' .... Though actually, Dr. Jones and company won't be waiting to take a look at Michael Gallup at Wednesday's practice; the Gallup watch here inside The Star begins today.
