Cowboys & DeAndre Hopkins Rumor: Sign if WR Gets Cut?

The Cowboys never really tried much on trading for DeAndre Hopkins. But what if the All-Pro becomes available via the Cardinals cutting him?

FRISCO - A Dallas Cowboys trade for Arizona Cardinals All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins? Inside The Star, no real overture was made there because the Cowboys would’ve had to “pay twice.”

That is, $17.2 million APY cap hits in the contact plus a “second-round pick plus” in the trade.

But what if Hopkins becomes available via the Cardinals cutting him?

According to Sports Illustrated reporter Albert Breer, some NFL teams think that the Cardinals will indeed end up releasing Hopkins due to the lack of interest on the part of Dallas and every other NFL team in paying those dual costs.

During an appearance on the Greg Bedard Podcast, Breer said, “Some teams think that the Cardinals will wind up cutting him. … His market is not great right now.”

The Cowboys never much bothered here, instead focusing on their “steal” of a trade fir another vet wideout, Houston’s Brandin Cooks.

If Hopkins is indeed cut, he’ll be free to pick his new team - and he has privately expressed interest in coming to Dallas, where he happens to be spending much of this off-season without doubt.

If he goes to the highest bidder? That surely won’t be Dallas. Breer is connecting the perennial Pro Bowler to QB Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs and to coach Bill Belichick’s Patriots.

But there is a potential new path to talent about to open - and it’s one Dallas must consider traveling.
