Cowboys’ Sam Williams Becoming ‘True Professional,’ Coach Says
The Dallas Cowboys already have an impressive young defensive corps with Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs, and maybe the next breakout star isn't even a draft class away. He's already on the roster. And his name is Sam Williams.
Williams, having already promised to bring 10 sacks to Dallas this season, caught high praise from coach Aden Durde this week.
"You can see that he's learned how to develop himself, and that's not to say that we don't develop them, but the biggest jump for Sam is he's becoming a true professional," said Durde. "He comes in and you see his flexibility has changed, his coordination has changed, his stance is better."
Despite coming off of the bench in 2022, Williams still finished in the top-5 for the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Now, after a full NFL offseason, Williams has taken the right steps to force coaches to offer him more playing time.
"The things he's needed to work on, he's gone out and worked on and improved," Durde concluded.
Williams tallied 10 tackles for loss, four sacks, three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble last season. Prior to that, his career at Ole Miss featured 22.5 sacks over three seasons, breaking the school's all-time record.
The young pass rusher has already proven statistically that he belongs on the field, but the intangibles and respect have been earned. The Cowboys investigated his “behavioral questions” before the 2022 NFL Draft and were satisfied enough to pick him. And late last season he was involved in a car wreck in which it’s fair to say poor judgment was used.
But going forward? Those 10 sacks might be tough to get. But Williams in the conversation as a breakout standout in 2023? The Cowboys think there are signs that suggest that.
