Kita and Moore plan to develop Prescott to fit new offense
In 2019, The Dallas Cowboys decided to move on from former offensive coordinator, Scott Linehan. With all speculation of the next OC being a new college hotshot, Jerry pulled the most Jerry move and hired within, promoting QBs coach and former backup, Kellen Moore. The NFL is a copycat league and right now all the craze is finding new young gun coaches because of what the 33 year old Sean Mcvay did last season, being the youngest coach ever to lead a team to the Super Bowl.
The Cowboys also hired another former backup QB Jon Kitna, former offensive coordinator of the San Diego Fleet of the now defunct Alliance of American Football league. Kitna praised Prescott, comparing him to Hall of Famer Warren Moon but says Prescott needs work, particularly in his footwork which will translate to getting the ball out faster and accuracy.
Kitna’s inspiration comes from former coach in Detroit, Mike Martz, who orchestrated the greatest show on turf in St. Louis. “I mean the stuff Mike taught me like I said in year 11 got my arm stronger, my release got faster and my accuracy went up,” said Kitna. “By teaching me how to work my right foot, ad nauseum. So I’m a big believer in it and we’ve already seen big changes in all of our quarterbacks.” According to Next Gen Stats, Prescott had the slowest release time of starting QBs averaging out at 2.82 seconds. Kitna’s plan could pay huge dividends to his development.
A lot is expected of new OC Kellen Moore with the likes of Prescott, Elliott and Cooper to his disposal in the offensive and he has been deemed as an “out of the box” thinker. Former teammate Dan Orlovsky compared Moore to the likes of Sean Payton, Andy Reid and offensive genius Sean McVay. Orlovsky credited Moore’s creativity and said he won’t be like most “cookie cutter” NFL coaches when it comes to play calling. Moore’s unorthodox scheme should open up the offense entirety, allowing receivers to find open space which could lead to success. Moore is not too far removed from his days at Boise State where he set an NCAA record with 50 wins. Head Coach Jason Garrett says it's too early to fully know what a Kellen Moore offense will look like, but there is nothing but optimism for the season. Moore loves the roster, saying that there are guys they can line up in various places in the offense and give different looks while still sticking to traditional cowboy philosophy.
Moore and Kitna should be able to combine their knowledge to help a stale Cowboys offense who placed 22nd in points last year with the league's leading rusher and first-round pick gone for #1 wideout Amari Cooper. The offense will be on full display for the first time when the Giants come to AT&T September 8th.
