'We're A Great Defense!' Cowboys Proclaim As Dallas Plans 'Monday Night' Rebound vs. Chargers

FRISCO - Jayron Kearse of the Dallas Cowboys has one thing right for certain in his review of the humiliating 42-10 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers. But he might have one thing that is ... well, less than certain.

"We're getting in the (meeting room) and watching to see what went wrong and then it's on to the next," said Kearse on Wednesday as the 3-2 Cowboys try to regroup. "They beat us. They beat us bad, but that's one game and we're on to the next.''

That is the exact right way to handle a third consecutive loss (including the last two postseasons) to a Niners team that is clearly superior to the Cowboys - no matter Micah Parsons' insistence that the two teams remain on the same tier.

But is this also right? Kearse, in a sense echoing Micah's faith in the program, also said, "We're a great defense. That's what we are.''

Yeah, but ... how can that be? Dallas won its first two games by a combined 70-10. That was pretty great. But if beating the Giants 40-0 and beating the Jets 38-10 makes Dallas great ...

How incredible must the 49ers be after they just did the same thing to Dallas?

Kearse went with a basketball analogy, saying, "You watch great shooters in basketball go out there and have rough games, and that's no different than us.''

One difference? "A great shooter'' in basketball is one guy. And even in a worst-case scenario, he doesn't miss all of his shots. The Cowboys on Sunday night pretty much did that ... and it was 40-plus guys ... all missing all of their shots?

Speaking of shots: Next Monday evening, the Cowboys get another one, at the Los Angeles Chargers. Their offensive coordinator is former top Dallas aide Kellen Moore - "I'm pretty sure he wants to go out there and put it on us," Kearse said - and the Cowboys defense (which in fairness has allowed a league-low 10.3 points per game before the Niners game) - will be tested.

"We went out there (Sunday) and had an all-time stinker for what this defense is about,'' Kearse said. "We're ready to go out there and play somebody ...''

And maybe to show that they are a "great defense.'' Or a "good defense.'' Or, at this point, "just decent enough to beat the Chargers'' would probably do.
