Eagles Returning Kelly Green Uniforms; What Does it Mean for Black Helmets?

Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie announced they are bringing back the Kelly green uniforms, which could see their brand-new black helmets scrapped.

The Philadelphia Eagles are going to bring back their fan-favorite Kelly green throwback uniforms this coming season, owner Jeffrey Lurie announced at the NFL Owners' meeting in Phoenix.

“I’m super excited,” Lurie said about the return of the Kelly green uniforms. “I don’t know what date that’s going to be, but I think fans will love it. It’s why we’re bringing it back. We really took the feedback seriously over the years. The first moment we could get the Kelly green helmet approved, we’ll finally be able to see it on the field.”

So what does that mean for their brand-new black helmets?

The Kelly green jerseys were the uniforms the franchise wore for over 60 seasons, and last appeared on the field for the 2010 season opener. Since then, they have been kept out of the public eye as the NFL's 2013 one-helmet rule meant the Eagles couldn't wear the Kelly green anymore.

Lurie and the Eagles led the initiative that saw the one-helmet rule come to an end, which allowed teams to introduce a second helmet last season. For Philly, that was a black helmet.

Maybe the Eagles plan on using both alternates next season, assuming they can acquire special permission from the NFL or else scrap it altogether. But at the very least, Eagles fans can rest assured they will see more of the Kelly green in 2023.
