Eagles Safety Depth: Philly's Biggest 'Flaw'?

The Philadelphia Eagles must figure out their safety problems if they want to return to the Super Bowl.

The Philadelphia Eagles are among the favorites to represent the NFC in this year's Super Bowl, but if the Birds were to repeat, it would look a little different.

Not only did the Eagles lose both coordinators to head coaching gigs, but they had to replace several players on the defensive side of the ball, including defensive backs C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Epps.

"Not only did they lose Gardner-Johnson, but Marcus Epps is gone too," Bleacher Report writes. "Gardner-Johnson was a difference-maker last season. Not only did he have six interceptions but he was able to slide in at slot corner when Avonte Maddox went down with injury."

To fill in the void of losing two of their top safeties, the Eagles signed Terrell Edmunds from the in-state rival Pittsburgh Steelers. He'll be expected to play a big role for the Eagles secondary. Another player needing to step up is Reed Blankenship, who Philly signed as an undrafted free agent in 2022.

It will be challenging for the Eagles to return to the Super Bowl, especially when you consider the fact that no NFC team has won consecutive conference championships since the Seattle Seahawks did so back in 2014 and 2015. But if Philly can fix its safety depth, that job will be a little easier.

The Eagles' new safeties will get a chance to prove themselves on Sunday, Sept. 10 against the New England Patriots. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m.
