Scott was an accomplished running back in high school who had three kick-off returns for a touchdown that went for 91, 93, and 100 yards.

He was an All-State running back and a fantastic defensive back in high school. He had seven interceptions as a senior en route to All-State status. Scott also ran track, ranking top-10 nationally as a track sprinter. Scott is relatively new to the wide receiver position.

Notables

Scott was a 2022 All-AAC Second Team selection after being named on Bruce Feldman’s Freak List. Scott finished his college career with 1,439 yards on 87 catches with 14 touchdowns. He recorded 54 catches for 899 yards and nine touchdowns in 2022 with seven drops. He opted out of his bowl game to focus on his future and the draft. Scott’s track background and athletic ability shined at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine.

Strengths

  • A sudden athlete with excellent acceleration and deep speed
  • Angle shattering explosiveness
  • Fluid athlete with good flexion throughout his body
  • Great movement skills in the short area (burst, lateral agility)
  • Excellent explosiveness off the LOS - good change of direction ability
  • Quickly gets in & out of breaks on curls/comebacks
  • Good salesmen up his route stem (relatively new to being a WR)
  • Works into DBs blind spots - good double moves up his team
  • Excellent spatial awareness vs. zone - finds voids well over the middle intermediate
  • Smooth stem manipulation as a vertical route runner - gets DBs turned around
  • Creates separation vs. man and zone because of athletic ability/processing
  • Has displayed solid concentration/tracking, albeit it’s not consistent
  • Showed ability haul in contested catches heading vertically
    • Utah: Q2, 4:41, 3rd & 1 - 34-yard TD
    • Arkansas: Q3, 7:52, 1st & 10- 30-yard catch up sideline
  • Very good vision with the football in his hands - former RB
  • YAC ability post-catch
  • Dealt with questionable QB play - stats could have been much better
  • Special teams upside

Weaknesses

  • Small catch radius was evident on his tape
  • Wasn’t forced to defeat press often - is he strong enough?
  • Physical coverage could give him issues in man - needs to be more balanced
  • More of a body catcher than a hands one
  • Significantly struggled to adjust to throws behind him
  • Marginal overall ability to adjust - needs a QB who is more precise
  • Frustrating drops on tape - didn’t bail his inaccurate QB out much
  • Not the strongest at the catch point - ball is dislodged vs. well-timed hits
  • Needs to be stronger on the ball

Summary

Tyler Scott is an explosive vertical threat with excellent athletic traits. He displayed above-average route nuance and savviness, with a good understanding of zone coverage. However, strength concerns and an inconsistent ability to track and be strong on the football are issues that hurt his game in 2022.

Scott was frequently used as the field side No. 1 receiver who ran many speed-outs; he lined 96.5% of his snaps outside with little usage in the slot. Free releases will assist Scott in his transition to the NFL after he played mostly “X” in Cincinnati’s spread RPO system.

Scott could have produced more with a better quarterback. He is a vertical threat with the ability to create his own separation; that is enough to warrant interest, despite some of the concerns.
