Giants waive RB Paul Perkins; awarded TE Kaden Smith off waivers

The Giants have waived running back Paul Perkins and have replaced him with tight end Kaden Smith, drafted in the sixth round this year by the 49ers out of Stanford.

Smith redshirted his freshman year at Standford. He then went on to play in 20 games, recording 70 catches for 1,049 yards and seven touchdowns before deciding to forgo his final year of eligibility.

The addition of sith gives the Giants five tight ends on their roster plus rookie C.J. Conrad on the practice squad.

A decision is likely coming to reduce that number by one as the Giants are set to host several players Tuesday for a workout.

The most likely player to be trimmed from the tight end group is Garrett Dickerson, who has been dealing with a quad injury since the summer, and who has been inactive.

Perkins was a fifth-round draft pick by the Giants in 2016. In his rookie campaign, he rushed for 546 yards on 153 carries but then struggled the following year after being named the starter by then-head coach Ben McAdoo.

Perkins missed the 2018 season with a pectoral injury suffered in the off-season. Despite making the 53-man roster this year, Perkins was inactive for the first two games this year.

His departure leaves the Giants with two running backs (Saquon Barkley and Wayne Gallman) and fullback Eli Penny.
