WATCH: Trading for Ravens' Alex Lewis is another savvy OL move by Jets GM Joe Douglas

Douglas is being wisely aggressive about overhauling the offensive line

It's becoming abundantly clear by the recent transactions that Jets GM Joe Douglas is determined to provide quarterback Sam Darnold with all the protection he needs.

First, it was five-time Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil coming out of retirement to join Gang Green. Now it's a guard from one of Douglas' former stomping grounds that's headed to the Jets.

The Jets acquired Ravens guard Alex Lewis for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2020, according to New York Daily News reporter Manish Mehta.

Initially, Lewis believed he was being released by the Ravens but the Jets pounced quickly because they didn't want him to hit the open market.

The 27-year-old Lewis was selected by the Ravens with the 130th pick in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Lewis has made 20 overall appearances and 18 starts during his career with the Ravens.

The 6-foot-6, 315-pound Lewis has been injury prone. Lewis missed the final six games of his rookie season because of a sprained ankle. Lewis sat out the entire 2017 season due to shoulder surgery. Last season, Lewis sustained a neck injury but only missed two games.

While his injury history plays a major factor in why Lewis was available, this was a nice addition by Douglas. The Jets didn't have to give up too much, so it wasn't that big of an investment. This move adds more depth along the offensive line, which was an area that needed to be addressed.

If Lewis can remain healthy he could reignite his career and effectively contribute to the Jets.

With the additions of Kalil and now Lewis, Douglas is wisely prioritizing an essential position that is crucial for the development of his franchise quarterback.

In order for the Jets to compete for a spot in the playoffs they'll need to be solid up front offensively. This move was another positive step in the right direction to accomplish that goal.
