Jim Costa: 'People Are So Defensive Over Jamo'

Examining the online reaction to Jameson Williams' first preseason game.

The online reaction of Detroit Lions supporters to the performance of wide receiver Jameson Williams has been extremely mixed.

Commentators and fans in attendance certainly groaned when Williams dropped what would have been a sure touchdown early in Friday's preseason opener.

Detroit's radio broadcast was adamant that the pass tossed by Nate Sudfeld could not have been better placed and should have been caught.

The second-year wideout only secured two receptions in his preseason debut at Ford Field.

One grab, though, electrified supporters, as Williams hauled in a one-handed reception to secure a two-point conversion.

Sports talk radio host Jim Costa, of WXYT-FM 97.1 The Ticket, believes Williams' performance against the Giants was not good enough, and wants to see much more from the former first-round draft pick.

"People are so defensive over 'Jamo,'" Costa posted on social media. "I swear some of you actually think there is some coordinated effort to run him out of town. Like a cloak and dagger illuminati meetings under the moonlight-type stuff. It's okay to say last night wasn't good enough."

Supporters are quick to defend members of Detroit's roster, especially a young player like Williams, who has not had many opportunities to showcase his skills.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed postgame that he felt Williams showcased more positives than negatives in his debut.

Others who are critical of Williams also have a point, as the young wideout did not have issues with drops in college and his last week at training camp was subpar.

On Saturday, he will have his next opportunity to showcase his skills, with the Lions taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars

Just like with New York, Detroit will also have two joint practices with the Jaguars at the team's Allen Park practice facility.

The addition of Teddy Bridgewater will be intriguing, as the coaching staff has heralded the veteran's ability to bring along young wideouts

Costa, who is not afraid to share bold, contrarian opinions, has taken heat for his opinion of Williams' off-field behavior.

Here is a sample of the reaction online to Costa's latest assessment of Williams.
